i’ll share the answer i gave her, as it relates to most every fabric we carry. if we have yardage of a fabric in stock and you need more, we’ll gladly put the fabric we have in stock on hold for you, and order a cutting directly from the manufacturer for the additional yardage you want. we’ll make sure the cutting of the new stock satisfactorily matches what we currently have, and if you are satisfied, we’ll order the additional yardage for you. and note that we always give 30% the fabric house’s retail on all special orders….

i am a decorator and this is less than my wholesale cost. are there any issues with this fabric?

thanks for your interest. yes, our price on this fabric is less than designer net, as is all of our inventory. we buy end runs directly from the mills, and that’s how we can have the pricing we do on our in-stock inventory. we also are substantially less than net on all the beacon hill and robert allen fabrics you see on our site, and we have access to their inventory at these prices. (and just to clarify, we don’t carry seconds.)

have you ever noticed or wondered about the little row of circles on printed fabrics running down the edge of the fabric? if you aren’t already aware of this, this printed ‘edge’ of the fabric is called selvage ( an old world contraction of the words self and edge).

when fabrics are printed, in most cases they are printed one color at a time. the dots serve as a record of all the colors individually printed on the fabric. it’s a great way to know exactly what colors are in any fabric and the ‘dots’ in the selvage allow the company to assure the color is being printed in the right place on the fabric ( the color shows up inside the ‘dot’). if the color are skewed from the ‘dots’, it probably means the fabric is not a first run fabric……

i am going to start posting questions we receive because the answers may help more than one person. and if there’s something i missed, or something i need to add, feel free to let me know. thanks.

i am interested in having my sofa reupholstered in linen. What do you recommend? Do you recommend 100% linen?
Thanks. Susan P.

hi, susan, thanks for your interest. the question you posed about reupholstering in linen is not the most simple to answer. linen is a durable fabric and a great comfortable look; but it really depends on your use for the piece as to whether it is appropriate.
if this is a piece that gets tons of wear or is the dog’s favorite spot, i might suggest something other than linen. and be prepared for a very ‘comfortable’ wrinkled look; as that is just what linen does. as a general suggestion, if you love the linen look but want a bit more durablility, please take a look at our everyday linens…..

http://www.oliverfabrics.com/private-label/everyday-linen/

they are 55% linen/ 45% viscose, which gives them more body and makes them much more durable. if you would like to see samples, please let me know a basic color for which you are looking, and we’ll get samples in that color(s) out to you…
